Epygi is pleased to announce that John Alves has been appointed Vice-President of Sales Force Europe (SFE), the Middle East and Africa starting on 1 January 2008.
"John is taking over the management of Epygi’s sales in EMEA from Rick Pizzoli, allowing Rick to focus his efforts on building the SFE-Epygi team in new markets," said Mario Cuello, President of Epygi Technologies, Ltd.
Objectives
Alves' objective is to help Epygi’s channels in the region grow their sales. "He will be meeting Epygi’s agents and distributors throughout the region over the next couple of months to develop strategies to achieve this growth," Cuello said, "His role will also include expanding the distribution network to cover more countries and creating new partnerships."
Experience
John brings to Epygi many years experience of managing distribution channels for telecom and datacom products in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, working for European and American companies.
He has a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and has been involved in the datacoms industry for 30 years. John started at Racal-Milgo in the days when a 4800 bit/s modem was the size of a PC today and cost thousands of dollars. He then worked for Micom, Databit and Datentechnik in sales management before becoming Managing Director of GN Nettest's UK subsidiary, supplying telecom test equipment to network operators.
Alves will be based in the UK, near London. When not at work his main interest is sailing. Contact Alves by e-mail: John.Alves@epygi.com, or by phone: +44- (0)20 7100 3504.

VoIP Myth #3
Counter to What You May Have Heard: Network Security and IP Telephony Work Well Together.
It’s better to make decisions based on fact as opposed to rumor, especially when it comes to IP telephony and network security. No one wants to be taking chances with either firewalls or effective communication. The information below will help you understand that the two aren’t on opposite sides…if you know the facts.
Myth: VoIP is not secure. Making it secure will have a negative impact on service.
Fact: As with any data application, security policies, firewalls and encryption greatly reduce the risk of hacks or intrusion. A secure communications network is critical for any business of any size. Your transition to IP voice must include protection from cyber-thugs looking to eavesdrop. The best IP PBX systems and associated routing devices (see all Epygi products) have built-in security features including a firewall and Virtual Private Networking.
Conclusion: A hacker that can access your data stream can decode the voice protocol and even make calls using your lines. The good news is that whatever is deployed for data security also is applicable to voice packets. Taking proper precautions and the right hardware can make your VoIP network as secure as any other form of telephony without sacrificing valuable features.

Epygi’s New QuadroM E1/T1 Delivers Clearer Voice, Expanded Capacity and Extended Durability
Advances make this new Quadro the best choice for integrating legacy phones with VoIP
Better voice quality, higher capacity, easier storage and a longer life cycle are four reasons to take a look at this improved IP Gateway. Housed in a durable black metal covering, the QuadroM also features a built in power source and fan for internal cooling. The new rack mount allows for better utility of space and function.
This newer model features 30 channels of compressed g.729 codec. The additional ports enable cost saving deployments in Mexico and South America with lower bandwidth networks. Users of the QuadroM E1T1 gateways can IP-enable legacy phone systems or increase connections to their current IP system. QuadroM complements Epygi's Quadro lines of single and dual port E1/T1 gateways.
Errata: The November newsletter incorrectly refered to the QuadroM E1T1 as an IP PBX.
