Going Green Means Seeing Green

Epygi Technologies’ Energy Efficient VoIP Line of Products Offers SMB’s Significant Business Benefits.

VoIP Opprotunities With the global economy diminishing and energy costs on the rise, small to medium businesses (SMB) need alternative, cost-saving solutions for overhead expenses. This year the United States Energy Information Administration forecasts that electricity prices will continue to rise with commercial prices breaking 10 to 17 cents per kilowatt-hour on a national average. (“Short Term Energy Outlook,” September 9, 2008.)

While many SMBs’ Chief Technology Officers continue to investigate VoIP technology for its savings on telecommunication costs, many will be forced to examine the product’s energy consumption. When comparing open source solutions run on PCs such as Trixbox to solid-state appliances such as Epygi’s IP PBX line of Quadros, there is a marked difference in the power consumption that translates into notable savings to the end user.

With the average US electrical costs around 11 cents per KWH, a PC used for open source telephony consumes 200 watts of power on a continuous basis equating to a yearly consumption of $ 192. In comparison, the Quadro2x and Quadro6L IP PBXs are based on embedded platforms and consume around 3 watts of power with a minimal yearly cost of $ 3. A SMB customer thus saves $ 189 the first year with $ 945 saving over a five year period.

“Since its conception and the beginning of our global distribution, Epygi Technologies has always been focused on being green. This is the main reason why we decided to manufacture an appliance-based solution rather than a server-based solution,” says Mario Cuello, CEO of Epygi. “Furthermore, our focus on having a low carbon footprint fits into our primary goal to save SMB users money and help them be more efficient.”

According to a recent survey by Forrester Research, 67 percent of 1,022 companies surveyed say the driving force behind accelerating their green IT initiatives is to reduce energy bills. (“10 tips to green IT,” January 2009.) “My customers see the value in saving on their electricity bills with the Epygi product,” explained Shane Mundee of Mundee Internet Solutions, an Epygi certified VAR. The device takes little power and doesn't even get hot to the touch!”

To small and medium business, particularly in the current economic climate, any savings is always welcome. Energy costs will continue to rise, and the need to consume less and be more efficient will be a priority in the years to come. Epygi is committed to continue development in energy efficient appliances in the future.
