The Rise of the SMB and What it Means to IT Resellers

The potential revenue from the SMB (small to medium size) market has captured the imaginations and marketing dollars of technology companies worldwide. Forecasts of a global 33% cumulative growth in IP PBXs for this segment from 2005 to 2010 have not fallen on deaf ears.

Such companies as Nortel and Avaya, who once reserved their marketing dollars for the biggest of clients, are now gearing up to take on the small business customer. However, for anyone to really capitalize on this market with VoIP products and services, they have to understand how SMBs work.

The number of employees in an SMB varies globally. EU member states generally consider up to 50 employees to be a small business and from 50 up to 250 to be medium sized. In the US, up to 100 is small and up to 500 is considered medium. Ten and under is universally considered a micro business or SOHO (Small Office Home Office). Considering the size range of businesses in this market, as well as industry type, you have a pretty diverse group.
